Here’s a preview of what you can expect for some of the quarterbacks down the draft board…

C.J. Stroud - QB, Houston Texans

The dreaded sophomore slump hit C.J. Stroud hard in 2024, with the second-year QB throwing for fewer yards and touchdowns than he did his rookie season while more than doubling his interception total. Of course, missing his top three receivers (Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, and Tank Dell) for various amounts of time contributed to the offense underperforming, but that didn’t stop the Texans from firing Bobby Slowik from his OC position just a year removed from Stroud’s 2023 OROY award. In his place, former Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley steps in to help get Stroud back on his fantasy feet, and Houston added former college teammates Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel out of Iowa State to add some juice to their passing game behind Nico Collins. With Tank Dell out of the picture for 2025, they’ll need their rookies to contribute early for Stroud to return to fantasy relevance, and the addition of Christian Kirk doesn’t hurt either in achieving that end – however, without any real rushing upside, Stroud’s role in supporting Nico Collins as a high-end WR1 might be more notable than his value in starting lineups besides in superflex and 2QB formats.

Tua Tagovailoa - QB, Miami Dolphins

Another year, another injury-plagued season for the embattled Dolphins quarterback who finished as the QB14 in points per game in an offense that looked nothing like the one we’ve come to know and love in fantasy land. With Tua starting only 11 games, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle weren’t able to get on track, resulting in a drastic cutdown on explosive plays in the passing game. Looking ahead to 2025, there aren’t any questions about the weapons Tua has around him – despite Tyreek Hill’s age, he’s still a force to be reckoned with on the outside, and Jonnu Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane all bring track speed to the offense that no other lineup can claim to have. It all boils down to the same simple question that’s haunted Tua his entire NFL career: can he stay healthy? With an ADP outside the first 12 rounds of fantasy drafts, the risk is baked into his price; if he’s able to stay healthy, he’s fully capable of exceeding expectations in a big way. He’s best drafted as a cheap backup QB option with the potential to appreciate into a weekly starter, but with a range of outcomes spanning from weekly QB1 down to occasionally unavailable QB3, Tua is essentially the used car of fantasy quarterbacks.

Bryce Young - QB, Carolina Panthers

Bryce Young flipped the script on his 2024 season after being benched just two games into the year, posting three top-10 finishes in his final six games and averaging 21.9 points per game in that span once Andy Dalton went down with an injury off the field. That turnaround has Young positioned as one of the most intriguing options at quarterback going into 2025; if he can keep up that QB1 pace he was on to close the season, he’d be an incredible value given his 15th round ADP in traditional 1QB leagues. The Panthers made sure to continue to invest in their 3rd-year QB, drafting him a new alpha WR1 in Tet McMillan in last April’s draft to pair up with 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette. It’s by far the best supporting cast Young has had at the NFL level, and with a dynamic running game to lean on and Dave Canales at the controls, Young could be poised to have his best fantasy finish of his career this season. One underrated aspect of Young’s game in 2024 that we’d love to see continue in 2025: his nose for the end zone on the ground. His 6 rushing touchdowns last season tied Anthony Richardson and Jayden Daniels for 3rd-most in the league and could help him push for league-winning status.

With the first week of preseason in the books, Faraz takes a look back at the biggest things we learned after this past weekend’s action.

Keep an eye on Kyle Monangai

D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson didn’t suit up for the Bears first preseason game, which left Monangai as the Bears starting RB. He took full advantage of his opportunities and made a few plays. He’s building on top of a good camp, and it’s worth watching to see if he can be the early down complement that we’ve seen have fantasy success in former Ben Johnson offenses. It’s worth noting Roschon is nursing a foot injury, so more opportunity expected Monangai’s way.

Kaleb Johnson off to interesting start

Of course, Arthur Smith decides to start Kenneth Gainwell with Jaylen Warren resting this past weekend. Once Gainwell was done, Johnson came on the field and had a less than stellar performance. It was his first preseason game, so can’t take much out of that performance. However, we could easily see some shenanigans with unwanted Gainwell usage this season given Arthur Smith’s history. I’ll be moving Warren up the rankings a bit.

Tyjae Spears has high ankle sprain

Unfortunately, Spears’ injury woes continue. Fortunately for Pollard managers, we could see a repeat year in which Pollard was the workhorse back if Spears can’t stay healthy - but this time, in a likely improved offense. Spears is expected to miss a month+, so Pollard could see some big workloads early in the year.

Jets 3-man RB rotation?

Uh oh. We saw all three RBs (Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis) see the field on the first drive. While Hall’s role was easily the best, coming off the field for some passing downs (Davis) isn’t what you want - especially for what will likely be a low scoring offense. Hall can still return on his ADP given the role he had in this game, but I’d have to see some more encouraging signs for him to reach the upside he’s capable of. It also doesn’t seem like Allen is the clear 3-down handcuff for Hall.

Chiefs hint at Rashee replacement

In a game without Hollywood Brown or Rashee Rice, the Chiefs played Xavier Worthy on the outside for all 4 of his routes, while rookie Jaylen Royals mixed it up, running a route from the slot on almost 50% of his 17 routes run, similar to the role Rashee had last year. Don’t be surprised to see Royals have some fantasy relevant weeks during Rashee’s suspension.

RJ Harvey starts for Broncos

JK Dobbins mixed in, but Harvey was the primary starting RB, and on the field for 12 of Bo Nix’s 18 snaps (67%) with the starters. Dobbins didn’t run the ball once - Harvey got all the carries with the first team. He also ran more routes than Dobbins, and was targeted on 40% of those routes. If this usage carries over into the regular season, we’re talking serious fantasy upside.
